Online language learning. Yes or no?

Online language learning. Yes or no?

Technology has become an important part of our everyday life and we can definitely agree that it has changed us in many different ways. It has changed the way we communicate with other people, it has changed the way we work and it has also changed the way we learn a new language or at least I like to think this way.

When I was younger and I was studying both English and Italian I was taught the old-fashioned way: one identical text book for everybody, lots of grammar, a lot of useless exercises and almost zero speaking practice. Not good, right? Language teaching should be innovative, enough with the old-fashioned way. It should be always focused on the needs of the students and most important of all it should be engaging and fun.

A lot of people ask me "Why are you teaching online? and "Why is it better to learn a language online?". I have studied quite a lot of languages with quite a lot of different methods and in my opinion studying a language online is the most effective way and here is why:

It's interactive

If you decide to study online you can be sure that you will always learn the interactive way. When you are learning a language online you have access to a big variety of interactive activities such as: watching videos online, learning new vocabulary with flashcards, playing fun and interesting games such as quizzes and so on. It can be also very useful to us, the teachers. Nowadays you can find a lot of online interactive materials, exercises and resources that would help create very interesting and fun lessons that the students would simply love.

It's flexible

You can study form your home, from your office or even when you are on holiday. You are the one who decides when and where. You can do it during your lunch break, when you get back from work or in the weekend, it's all up to you. And all you need is a laptop and a good internet connection (and let's just admit that we all have that). There is no need to waste any of your time in traffic, trying to get on time for your lesson. Simply turn on your computer and start learning, amazing isn't it?

Mobile language learning

Besides your computer you could also use your phone, we all have one don't we? And we are all using them constantly - when you are in the bus going to work, when you are having a break, when you are eating and so on. So why not focus the time you spend on your mobile on language learning? There are plenty of apps that you can download, that could help you become better in the language you are studying such as Duolingo for example. And the best part is that a lot of them are free!

Costs less money

Yes, it does! If you want to have private lessons, you should definitely go for the online lessons as they are cheaper then the "face to face" ones. Is there any difference between studying online and "live"? Not at all! It's exactly the same with the only difference that you see your teacher on Skype or whatever app you are using. The lesson itself isn't going to change because you are doing it online, all the things that you are doing in the classroom can be also done on the Internet. So why spend more money?

Yes or No

If you are still wondering whether to start learning online or not, my advice is to go for it. It will save you time and money and you can do it from wherever you like! Learning online is more effective and more modern. Forget about the traditional old approach where you are sitting in a classroom looking at your textbook while doing some quite useless exercises. Go for the fun and interactive way of studying a language, do it online!
